About United World Colleges (UWC)

What is UWC?

United World Colleges (UWC) is a global network of schools and colleges that aim to make education a force for peace and a sustainable future. UWC brings together students from different backgrounds and countries to study together, learn about each other's cultures, and work on important social and environmental issues. The goal is to help students become more open-minded and make a positive impact in the world.

When was UWC first established?

United World Colleges (UWC) was first started in 1962. The idea was founded by Kurt Hahn, a German educator, with the aim of promoting international understanding and peace through education. The first UWC school, Atlantic College, was established in Wales, United Kingdom.

How many UWC schools and colleges are there worldwide? As of 2024, there are 18 United World Colleges (UWC) schools and colleges around the world. Admission and Selection through National committee:

  • Each country with a UWC presence has its own National Committee, which is responsible for managing the admissions process within that country.

  • National Committees organize the selection of students who apply to UWC schools from their respective countries.

Application Process:

  • Local Applications: Students submit their applications to the National Committee of their country. The committee reviews these applications based on local criteria and UWC’s global values.

  • Interviews and Assessments: The National Committees often conduct interviews, review academic records, and assess personal statements to evaluate applicants. They may also use additional assessments or group activities to gauge candidates’ suitability.

Selection:

  • Shortlisting: The National Committee shortlists candidates who best fit UWC’s values and mission.

  • Final Recommendations: The selected candidates are then recommended to UWC for final consideration. These recommendations are based on the committee’s assessment of the candidates’ alignment with UWC’s principles.

Financial aid For Afghan Students at UWC

UWC offers a range of financial aid options to support students from diverse financial backgrounds. This includes full and partial scholarships that cover tuition, boarding, and other essential costs. Financial aid is designed to ensure that students can attend regardless of their financial situation. Almost all selected candidates will receive a full scholarship covering all costs for two years. Some UWC schools also cover the cost of travel to and from the school for the initial arrival and for summer trips home. Additionally, some UWCs provide monthly pocket money, although these offerings can vary from one UWC to another based on the specific scholarship.

UWC For Afghan Youth

The UWC community was profoundly impacted by the events that occurred in Afghanistan in August 2021. The ensuing humanitarian crisis prompted UWC to take action and launch the UWC for Afghan Youth Appeal to increase its support to Afghan students. Since the inception of this initiative, 47 young Afghans — 37 of them girls — have been given the opportunity to access a life-changing UWC education at 14 different UWC schools, all with financial support.
